About the OCEAN CLEANER
Guardians of the Sea
The Ocean Cleaner was born from a simple but powerful truth: the ocean gives us everything — and it is our responsibility to protect it.
The company was originally founded by a passionate French sailor who designed the Sargaboat®, a pioneering solution to fight sargassum and floating marine debris in the Mexican Caribbean. His innovation marked the beginning of a mission: defend the sea with intelligence, efficiency, and respect.
Today, that mission is led by Edwin Motté.
Edwin learned to sail at just six years old. The sea has never been just water to him — it is home, freedom, and life itself. He grew up swimming, diving, and exploring coral reefs, developing a deep connection with marine ecosystems and a profound respect for their fragility.
In 2019, he joined The Ocean Cleaner driven not only by business vision, but by purpose. In 2021, he became a partner. And in 2024, he acquired the company with a clear commitment: elevate its impact and protect the coastline he loves.
Under his leadership, The Ocean Cleaner is more than a company — it is a promise to future generations.
For more than a year he has been working with his new partner Vanessa Vargas in The Ocean Cleaner Mexico. Thanks to her, the company continues to grow with a strong focus on innovation, operational excellence, and environmental responsibility, while gathering numerous actors of Sargassum value chain.
What about the Sargaboat®? It’s a sargassum and floating debris collector that’s become essential along the Riviera Maya for over five years. With unmatched speed and reliability, it stands out as the most efficient collector boat of its kind. Curious to see it in action?

Custom Solutions
Formed by a dedicated team based in France and Mexico, The Ocean Cleaner is a start-up created to respond to a recognized problem crying out for a solution – we believe in keeping beaches and oceans free of pollution. We back our convictions with our expertise.
Hotels and resorts were the first to recognize the Sargassum problem as they saw their tourist destinations taking the hit from a 45% reduction in occupancy and loss of reputation. Officials have tried to respond to the massive influxes of Sargassum washing up on shores across the Caribbean with various measures, using rakes and manpower with backhoes to remove or plow under the rotting detritus. While these efforts are laudable, they are only a stopgap and prove expensive to maintain. Others tried deploying booms meant for oil recovery, which were not designed to handle gulf Sargassum weed proliferation and proved ineffective.
At The Ocean Cleaner we take pride in our innovation, in our ability to adapt and resolve problems for our installed customer base, and our willingness to help provide a welcoming environment for guests and visitors.

SCIENCE & ENGINEERING
In action to solve sargassum overload on the coast
Our team at The Ocean Cleaner came up with a better solution, stopping the problem before it lands on the beach and becomes worse.
We determined Sargassum weeds and detritus could be stopped by a customized floating barrier offshore, then collected by specialized boats and repurposed or recycled in an eco-friendly manner. With the fine mesh in our barrier design, marine life is not adversely affected, and in the case of sea turtles, among others, Sargassum control efforts prove advantageous.
From concept through to design – and implementation – our enthusiastic team of environmentally conscious thinkers and doers has expanded, working from our headquarters in France and Mexico.
This resulted in the deployment of our system in Mexico, where it quickly proved its viability and reliability to resolve a problem that won’t simply wash away. Definite measures are required to address Sargassum. The Ocean Cleaner offers a turnkey, eco-friendly solution for hotels, resorts and local governments.
